Papua New Guinean Scientist Secures Position at USA University

 Papua New Guinea scientist Dr. Yalinu Poya Gow has recently secured a prestigious position as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Gow expressed her excitement about beginning this new role, highlighting the significance of this career milestone.

Today marks Dr. Yalinu’s final day at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), where she has served as a Lecturer in Environmental Science. Over the years, Dr. Gow has made substantial contributions to various MSc programs including Sustainable Technology, Waste Management, Project Management, and Quality Management within the School of Computing, Engineering, and Physical Sciences.

Dr. Gow praised UWS as a premier institution in the United Kingdom, commending its exceptional care for both staff and students. During her tenure, Dr. Gow embraced numerous roles and responsibilities, demonstrating her dedication to academic excellence. Her roles included Module Coordinator for three distinct modules, ASPIRE Advisor for 75 students in Chemistry, Forensic Science, and Criminal Justice at the Undergraduate Year 2 level, and a member of three Design Teams responsible for creating new degree programs. She also designed five modules and engaged in curriculum design, served as the First Supervisor for eight MSc students, and as a Co-Supervisor for one PhD student.

Boston, known as one of the United States' premier higher education hubs, is home to over 30 universities within the city alone. The state of Massachusetts, recognized globally for its exceptional institutions, particularly excels in STEM fields, innovation, and advanced technology. Dr. Gow's new role places her at the center of this academic and research excellence.

Reflecting on her time in the UK, Dr. Gow expressed gratitude for the opportunity to teach at UWS and her sorrow at leaving British academia, albeit temporarily. Although this marks the end of her teaching tenure in the UK, Dr. Gow plans to maintain ties through ongoing research and collaborations as a STEM expert.

Dr. Gow, who hails from Ialibu in the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, concluded her message with a heartfelt acknowledgment of the support she received during her tenure. While preparing to leave the UK, Dr. Gow remains committed to continuing research and collaborations, underscoring her ongoing connection to both the academic community and her roots in Papua New Guinea.
