PNG Landowner Students Graduate Through MRDC Support at DWU

Nine students from resource-project communities across Papua New Guinea (PNG) have successfully completed their studies at the 44th graduation ceremony of Divine Word University, thanks to sponsorship from the Mineral Resources Development Company’s Education Subsidy Program.

The students were among 793 graduates who received certificates and degrees during the ceremony held in Madang on March 6.

Among the MRDC-supported group were three students who completed Master’s programs and six who earned Bachelor’s degrees, with one graduate also receiving the university award for the highest GPA.

The sponsorship was facilitated through several landowner company boards associated with MRDC, representing communities linked to resource development projects around the country.

MRDC’s General Manager for External Affairs Bartholomew Yacop attended the event and praised the commitment shown by trustees and families who continue to invest in education for young people from their areas.

He said the subsidy program plays a key role in helping students gain professional skills and qualifications.

According to Mr Yacop, many students from impacted communities struggle with the cost of tertiary education, and assistance from the program enables them to pursue their academic goals.

“The Subsidy Program is a privilege for many students and their parents, and the Boards and their trustees must be commended for the investment in their students,” he said.

“Many students from the impacted communities are often disadvantaged by high tuition fees, and this investment helps them achieve these credentials. Our hope is that the students return to their host provinces and communities and help with improving development endeavours.”

MBA graduate Roni Boli, who was funded through the Petroleum (Kutubu) PDL 1 trust, said the sponsorship allowed recipients to focus on completing their studies.

“It is not an easy feat, but many of us managed to complete these studies knowing our board and community have invested in our education. This success belongs to the community, and I look forward to heading back to my community and giving back,” he said.
